Peacham and Montpelior

Rain in the night, but another beautiful  morning with maple leaves on the tent fly.

We walked in the fields below the house

then we all drove west from Peacham on gravel roads past several forest ponds

to Cabot Plain, a high ridge with views of the Green Mountain off to the west and a covered bridge in the middle of a field, for no apparent reason.

We drove on to an apple orchard, new trees of many varieties, including Macintosh, apple of the Bitteroot Valley and a favorite of mine.

Boxes of apples secured, we drove through Marshfield and Plainfield to Montpelior, nice busy downtown of local shops

the capitol nestled right against downtown

Old buildings housing state agencies, this one their Department of Agriculture, I believe

and pretty red courthouse.

After a stop at the local food coop (Nancy's yogurt!  I thought  I felt a Eugene vibe) we drove back to Peacham, taking a back road over Mack's Mountain, some of the prettiest countryside I've seen.  A good place to live, especially if you like a long, snowy winter.
